How Supercars Ditch Windshields with Secret Tech

Important elements in vehicles

Is there a vehicle that has been completely removed?

The Ferrari Monza SP 2 is a model without a front windshield.

One of a vehicle’s most basic elements is the windshield. Commonly called the windshield, it is a part of an automobile that is taken for granted. It is used to protect the driver and ensure safe visibility while driving.

However, some manufacturers make vehicles without windshields, which plays an important role. The world’s most famous supercar manufacturers are Ferrari and McLaren. Based on their outstanding technology, both manufacturers have produced supercars that do not require windshields, but questions arise as to how they work and whether they can actually be driven.

Virtual wind shield applied Ferrari SP Monza

The Monza SP model produced by Ferrari is the most representative vehicle without a windshield. As the first model of Ferrari’s special segment Icona, this vehicle was produced in a limited edition of 200 units. It was so rare that the general public could not obtain it. Based on the Ferrari 812 Superfast, it uses a V12 engine to produce 810 horsepower and a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph).

There is no windshield in the Monza SP, but Ferrari’s new technology, Virtual Windshield, has been applied. It can manage internal airflow without a windshield and can withstand strong air resistance to some extent. This can be used by utilizing the pairing function in front of the instrument panel and steering wheel.

Proven to be the ultimate in aerodynamics
McLaren supercar Elva

Elva, a supercar unveiled by McLaren in 2021, is an open-cockpit roadster limited to 249 units worldwide. It is similar in shape to the Ferrari Monza SP. This vehicle, which generates an output of 815 horsepower with a 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine, is a model inspired by the race car developed by Bruce McLaren in the 1960s.

The McLaren Elva was also produced as a vehicle without a windshield. Using the active air management system can overcome the absence of a windscreen. It is a system that adjusts the airflow to suit the driving situation. The airflow that starts from the front of the vehicle is sent over the driver’s seat, making the driver feel as if the driver is inside a giant bubble. A different feature of the Ferrari Monza SP is that a windshield option was provided for road driving.

Developed based on a race car
Impressed with the technology of both brands

Since the two brands of vehicles introduced earlier are companies that have developed through excellent race car technology and history, such a risky adventure may have been possible. Both brands have excellent aerodynamic technology, which is applied to both models.

China BYD Fang Cheng Bao recently unveiled a new look for the SuperCar Super 9 and showed off a similar design. Meanwhile, even if the Ferrari Monza SP is one of only a few vehicles in the world, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a soccer star from Sweden, was often seen driving it without any problems.
