Toy-Like, but Real: World of Driveable Half-Scale Classics

Adult Hobbyists, Harrington Cars

A half-scale classic vehicle is about half the size of a real vehicle. It looks like a children’s toy but can drive like a real vehicle. This vehicle is equipped with steering, shaft, suspension, brakes, instrument panel, etc., so even adults can ride in it.

Harrington Group specializes in half-scale classic vehicles and has been manufacturing vehicles for over 20 years. It is famous for manufacturing miniature classic cars as a homage based on its experience in manufacturing parts for actual vehicles. It produces more than 10 types of vehicles, making it popular among vehicle enthusiasts.

The actual driving is also precise
A popular hobby in Europe

The size of the vehicle produced is about 2 meters (78.7 inches) in length and 1 meter (39. 4 inches) in width, which is half the size of a commonly produced vehicle. However, the materials and parts that make up the vehicle are applied and used in an almost similar way to a full-sized vehicle, so it is actually possible to drive quite accurately.

The models of vehicles produced are produced in reduced sizes in homage to classic cars that have made a name for themselves as legendary vehicles such as Mercedes-Benz and Shelby Cobra, so we can enjoy looking at them as well. Therefore, it has long been known as a popular collectible and hobby among so-called rich vehicle enthusiasts in Europe, the U.S., and the Middle East.

Everyone rides, regardless of gender or age
Recently seen in South Korea

Not only children but also one to two adults can ride in these vehicles. For this reason, races using Harrington vehicles are sometimes held overseas. The driving method is mostly electric motors, and the characteristic feature is that it is equipped with a 48V motor and can run for up to 3 hours with 1.2kW of power. However, it does not reach the speed of a real vehicle, and in South Korea, it can be driven at 24 km/h (15 mph) according to South Korean regulations.

Representative production models include AC Cobra, Jeep, and Mercedes-Benz 300 Roadster. It is said that there are plans to gradually expand the lineup in the future and produce a more diverse range of vehicles. In South Korea, it has recently been frequently seen in the media and online, and is being used for events using the vehicle.

May Not Align with South Korean Sensibilities
But Mostly Positive Reactions

It is somewhat similar to the culture of wealthy Europeans who collect classic vehicles. That may be why it is becoming more popular in Europe than in South Korea. It’s a shame that no matter how beautiful a classic vehicle is released in half scale, there is no space to drive or enjoy it in South Korea.
