Mercedes-Benz has shared an update on the progress of the upcoming opening of some charging stations, the first update since announcing the initial plans for the global high-performance electric vehicle charging network in January. In early January, Mercedes-Benz announced plans for a new fast-charging hub network, in collaboration with MN8 Energy, to raise funds and operate jointly.
The initially announced network consists of over 400 planned charging hubs, which will be the headquarters for over 2,500 DC fast charging stations across North America. Mercedes-Benz stated that they plan to establish charging hubs in densely populated areas where more electric vehicles require charging, providing access along highways and near retail stores and other service centers. This plan results from a recent collaboration among seven global automakers to implement a universal charging network.
Mercedes-Benz plans to expand the global reach of its charging infrastructure to over 10,000 chargers by the end of 2020. The first Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle charging stations, set to open this fall, will start in Atlanta, USA, Chengdu, China, and Mannheim, Germany. By the end of 2024, the company plans to expand the global network to over 2,000 locations and open more than 2,000 charging hubs by 2030.
The charging stations will offer a maximum charging speed of 400kW and provide various plugs to accommodate all-electric vehicles, including CCS1, CCS2, NACS, and GB/T. As mentioned in the initial network announcement in January, Mercedes charging hubs will offer plug-and-charge services to Mercedes EV drivers and allow them to reserve chargers in advance. The network will be accessible to everyone.
Mercedes-Benz announced that its network charging network, the Charger Hub, will seamlessly integrate with existing electric vehicle charging access and will join over 1.3 million accessible charging points worldwide.
