From choosing bean sprouts
to how to store them for a long time, I’ll tell you everything.
Hello~ bros! It’s Household Brother here.
You bought bean sprouts intending to make bean sprout soup after a long time, but when you took them out to eat again, all the bean sprouts had wilted…? Why is it so hard to store vegetablesㅠㅠ It’s always heartbreaking to pull them out intending to eat them, only to find them spoiled..
Honestly, it’s not easy to cook an entire bag of bean sprouts when you live alone. But you can’t just throw away the leftovers every time, so I’ve found a way to store them for a long time~
I’m sharing this for those of you who also have this dilemma!
Not only the storage method, but also how to choose fresh bean sprouts and how to wash them~ Because once when Household Brother went to the market to buy bean sprouts, I picked a batch in bad condition and the store employee had to replace them for me.
I’m sure there are others like me who don’t know how to choose good bean sprouts and just pick any~ Shall we go and learn about bean sprouts??
First, I’ll tell you in order: how to choose bean sprouts → how to wash bean sprouts → how to store bean sprouts. Let’s go★
How to Choose Bean Sprouts
I’ll tell you how to choose fresh bean sprouts. First, good bean sprouts have plump heads and stems. And those with black spots might be spoiled, so I recommend buying bean sprouts with clean heads that are yellowish.
Also, there’s an easy way to tell just by looking – check the roots. Bean sprouts with short bodies and long, thin roots are said to be good for vascular health and are fresh. On the other hand, those with long bodies and short roots are factory-grown bean sprouts and their nutritional value is lower!
From now on, let’s choose bean sprouts with clean, yellowish heads, short bodies, and long roots~
How to Properly Wash Bean Sprouts
It’s recommended to gently rinse bean sprouts several times rather than washing them vigorously. It’s better not to try to finish in one go.
1) First, put the bean sprouts in a bowl and add enough water to cover them.
2) Gently separate the clumped bean sprouts in the water.
3) Grab a handful and rinse several times under running water.
If you repeat this process about three times, you can clean them thoroughly!
Many people remove the tiny roots while washing, but these roots are rich in ‘aspartic acid’, which is good for hangover relief, so if you’re trying to alleviate a hangover, it’s better not to remove the roots!ㅎㅎ
How to Store Bean Sprouts for a Long Time
If you just put the bag of bean sprouts in the refrigerator as is, water will form and they’ll wilt quickly. If you want to store bean sprouts for a long time, try this.
1) Put in a Ziploc bag
Divide the bean sprouts into small amounts and seal them in Ziploc bags. Before putting them in the bag, don’t wash the bean sprouts to keep them fresher for longer.
After sealing the Ziploc bag, use a toothpick to poke 2~3 holes. This creates air holes, allowing the bean sprouts to stay fresh. The key point is to remember to poke air holes with a toothpick~
2) Put in an airtight container
Rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly, drain the water in a sieve, and then store them in an airtight container~
When storing in an airtight container, add enough water to cover the bean sprouts and store in the refrigerator. However, you need to change the water every 1~2 days, so it’s important not to forget to do this even if it’s a hassle!
If you store them in an airtight container with water, you can keep them for up to a week, so please keep that in mind!
Today, I’ve told you in order how to choose fresh bean sprouts, how to wash them, and how to store them. It’s good to know about bean sprouts since we eat them often, right?ㅎㅎ
