UN Security Council Calls Emergency Meeting to Address North Korea’s Satellite Launch

Eugene Park Views

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to hold an emergency meeting on the 27th (local time). They plan to discuss responses to North Korea’s military reconnaissance satellite launch.

According to the UN Headquarters on the 26th, the Council will hold an official meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States, at 10 a.m. on the 27th.

Eight member nations, including the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom, requested to convene the meeting. South Korea will also attend the meeting as a party of interest.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the military reconnaissance satellite launch carried out by North Korea on the 21st. He emphasized that it clearly violates the Security Council’s resolution.

However, experts anticipate achieving tangible outcomes, such as announcing a Security Council-level condemnation statement against North Korea or adopting a resolution at the meeting, will be difficult.

Since permanent members China and Russia have been siding with North Korea against the West, including the United States, the Security Council has been unable to take concrete actions such as sanction resolutions or statement adoption against North Korea’s ballistic missile and satellite launches since 2018.
