Russia Breaks Silence on North Korea’s Satellite Launch

Eugene Park Views

Russia has stated that North Korea’s military reconnaissance satellite launch cannot be seen as space weaponization. According to Sputnik News on the 28th (local time), Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in response to North Korea’s launch of a reconnaissance satellite on the 21st, “It should not be seen as a weapon deployment.”

Deputy Minister Ryabkov asserted that there should be no strike-type weapons in space. He clarified that North Korea’s satellite should not be considered part of space weaponization.

In response to the inquiry regarding potential intentions to reach an agreement with North Korea concerning the deployment of space weapons, Deputy Minister Ryabkov expressed that they were encouraging all countries and members of the international community to participate in a political commitment to abstaining from deploying weapons in space. He underscored that this proposal had received support from over 30 countries.

When Deputy Minister Ryabkov was questioned about potential nuclear weapons discussions with the United States, he conveyed that there were no planned bilateral contacts on this issue by the end of the year.

However, he mentioned that in December, the U.S. and Russian delegations could unofficially meet to discuss the concerns of the parties related to nuclear weapons.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, revealed that they are monitoring the possibility of the U.S. conducting weapons tests at the Nevada nuclear test site.
