The Republican Party, the majority party in the U.S. House of Representatives, has initiated the process to formalize an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. This move appears to be an attempt to intensify the political offensive against President Biden, a Democratic candidate, ahead of next year’s election.
On the 7th (local time), the Republicans introduced a resolution to formalize the impeachment inquiry against President Biden, which is currently underway in three House committees, including the Judiciary, Oversight, and Budget committees.
In September, then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had ordered the three committees to conduct an impeachment inquiry into President Biden’s family without a vote in the House plenary session. While the committees have been working on the impeachment inquiry, there have been no noticeable results.
Suppose the House plenary session passes the impeachment inquiry resolution. In that case, the relevant committees will have more authority than they currently do, including the ability to execute subpoenas in their investigation into President Biden’s family and hold public hearings. If this process unfolds during next year’s election cycle, the political battle could intensify, regardless of the impeachment’s outcome.
The Republicans have been claiming that President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, unfairly profited from a Ukrainian energy company and a Chinese private equity fund and that the Biden administration did not properly investigate this.
The House is expected to vote around the 13th, following a review by the House Rules Committee on the 12th. Current House Speaker Mike Johnson conveyed assurance regarding the resolution’s passage. He stated that the White House’s refusal to engage with the impeachment inquiry renders this resolution a constitutionally required step.
The White House expressed strong disapproval of the Republicans’ action. White House Spokesperson Ian Sams described the act as outrageous, lacking any factual basis, and driven by what he characterized as the Republicans’ extreme and unapologetic eagerness to defame President Biden.
