Kim Jong Un Announces Satellite Launches
Proposed Fundamental Shift in Inter-Korean Relations
North Korea announced on the 31st that it would launch three additional military reconnaissance satellites next year.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim Jong Un stated on the fifth day of the Workers’ Party plenary meeting held on the 30th, “We have declared the task of launching three additional reconnaissance satellites in 2024.”
The meeting discussed comprehensive national measures to promote space science and technology development vigorously. The announcement also conveyed Kim’s statement that a “fundamental shift in the South Korean sector was proposed based on a cool analysis of the painful history of North-South relations that have only repeated distrust and confrontation.”
The news agency reported that Kim stated, “It’s a mistake we should no longer make to consider those who declare us ‘enemies’ and collude with foreign forces to look for opportunities for ‘regime collapse’ and ‘unification by absorption’ as the counterpart of reconciliation and unification.”

Along with this, Kim mentioned, “In the event of a possible nuclear crisis, we must continue to accelerate preparations for a major disaster to quickly respond and mobilize all physical means and capabilities, including nuclear forces, to pacify the entire territory of South Korea.” The end-of-year plenary meeting of the North Korean Workers’ Party, which began on the 26th, seems to have ended with the fifth day of meeting on the 30th.
