Man in his 50s sentenced to 22 years in prison for murder

Prosecution appealed against the first trial ruling

A man in his 50s a former soldier who killed his ex-wife and his remarried wife was sentenced to 22 years in prison prompting an appeal from the prosecution.

The Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office announced on the 24th that it had filed an appeal against the first-instance verdict that sentenced former soldier A to 22 years in prison on charges of murder.

Recently, Judge Hwang In-sung of the 12th Criminal Department of the Suwon District Court sentenced A who was indicted on charges of murder to 22 years in prison and ordered him to wear a location tracking device for 10 years.

However, the prosecution had previously demanded a 30-year prison sentence for A.

The prosecution explained, “We appealed for a more severe sentence commensurate with the crime, citing the very high possibility of criticism for the serious crime of a husband murdering his wife, the fact that the defendant reoffended despite having a similar murder conviction for strangling his ex-wife eight years ago, and the fact that the victims’ families are petitioning for severe punishment against the defendant.”

A is accused of causing cardiac arrest by strangling his wife B (46) at the laundry shop he was running in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, around 6 pm on July 12 last year. B was transferred to the hospital, but she passed away while receiving life-saving treatment on November 5 of the same year.

The investigation revealed that A committed the crime out of rage after being ignored by B while discussing the closure of the laundry shop and the operation of a new gimbap (Korean-style rice roll) restaurant.

Previously, A was indicted in 2015 for strangling his wife during an argument unable to control his anger, and was sentenced to four years in prison and treatment custody by the Navy Operations Command Military Court.

Based on this, A claimed in court that he suffered mental & physical loss or mental & physical weakness at the time of the crime. However, the court did not admit Mr. A’s mental and physical weakness.

The court said, “The defendant admitted his wrongdoing and received treatment for a mental disorder for a considerable period, and served the country for a significant period as a professional soldier in his youth. However, murder is a very serious crime that infringes on the value of human life and causes irreparable harm. The victim lost her life and cannot be brought back by any means. Considering that he was recommended for life-long imprisonment after receiving treatment custody for a murder charge in 2015, but voluntarily stopped taking medication, we decided on a higher sentence than the sentencing standard.”
