Could It Fill the Void Left by Cybertruck?
Many startups have been born with the advent of the electric vehicle era. While developing engines for internal combustion vehicles is challenging, and patents are held by companies that produce engines, making it difficult for new companies to enter the market, electric vehicles are relatively easier to develop as they can source electric motors and batteries from specialized suppliers.
Fisker, an electric vehicle startup established in the United States, had previously gone bankrupt but was re-established in 2016. They launched their first model, the Ocean, in 2022 and plan to release the Fisker, Alaska, and Ronin in the future. The pickup truck lineup, Alaska, will be exported to Europe by 2025.
What Kind of Vehicle is Fisker’s Pickup Truck, Alaska?
The Fisker Alaska is a full-sized pickup truck in the same class as the Ford F-150 Lightning.
Upon closer inspection of the design, it can be seen that it has an overall streamlined structure.
This is a design form rarely seen in pickup trucks, and it gives a futuristic feel that is characteristic of electric vehicles.
Unlike typical pickup trucks, the cargo bed is not separate but integrated.
The platform is based on Fisker’s self-developed FT31, which has been enlarged and has a total length of 17.4 feet.
The European Export Model
Will be Sold Under the Name Kayak
Plans are to start selling in Europe from 2025, and unlike in the United States, they will be sold under the name Kayak. This appears to be a change to avoid name duplication with Renault’s pickup truck, Alaskan. The output is 275 horsepower in the entry trim and 564 in the top trim.
The battery can be equipped with a 75kWh or 113kWh capacity. The 75kWh battery can travel 230 miles, and the 113kWh battery can travel 340 miles. The wheels can be chosen in 20 or 22 inches, and the cargo bed can be extended from the smallest length of 4.5 feet to 7.5 feet or 9.2 feet as an option.
Starting Price 41,060 Euros
How Likely is it to Preempt the Market?
The European sales price has not yet been confirmed, but Fisker is considering a starting price of 41,060 Euros (approximately USD 45,000). This is relatively cheap for a full-sized electric pickup truck.
Currently, there are hardly any electric pickup trucks in Europe.
Leading American electric pickup trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, and Rivian R1T have not yet entered the European market. Therefore, it seems highly likely that Fisker’s Kayaq could preempt the market.
