[iNews24, Shin Soo-jung Reporter] A coffee shop in China is making headlines for its newly launched Pepper Coffee, a spicy concoction made by adding fried peppers and chili powder to coffee.
On the 4th (local time), South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on a unique beverage gaining popularity in China, with an article titled “Chinese cafe sells over 300 cups of Pepper Coffee a day”.
Pepper Coffee was launched in December last year at Jiangxi Coffee located in Ganzhou city, south of the Yangtze River in Jiangxi Province, China. This region is known for having the spiciest cuisine in China.
This coffee, known as Jiangxi Spicy Latte, is made by thinly slicing fried peppers into an iced latte and sprinkling chili powder on top. It is reported to sell over 300 cups a day. The price is 20 yuan (approximately $3.10) per cup.
In response, a store associate stated, “This coffee is not as strange as people think,” adding that the response from customers who have tried the pepper coffee has been positive.
Videos of Chinese people trying the Pepper Coffee and certifying it on social media are being posted. One consumer left a review saying, “The new Pepper Coffee is not bad. It has a slightly spicy and sweet taste.”
On the other hand, there were contrasting reactions, with some saying, “I was shocked because the taste was outrageously abnormal,” and “It’s creative, but I don’t dare to try it for fear of getting a stomachache.”
