A court has ruled that a doctor must pay approximately $18,000 in damages to a man who was severed during a penile enlargement surgery.
According to a report by the Chosun Ilbo on the 19th, Judge Park Seol Ah of the Seoul Eastern District Court Civil 4th Single Bench partially ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a damage compensation lawsuit filed by the victim against the doctor who performed the surgery last month, on the 25th.
The victim informed the doctor that he had previously undergone two penile enlargement surgeries during a consultation for a penile implant surgery.
In May 2020, he underwent surgery for penile enlargement by an implant doctor. Still, severe bleeding occurred during the operation, leading to the surgery being halted, and he was transferred to a higher-level hospital.
He suffered severe damage, including a 100% severance of the corpus spongiosum, resulting in a disability that made it difficult to urinate, stand up, or engage in sexual activity.
The court found that the doctor had attempted a risky surgery, including trying to forcibly separate it in the adhered state due to two previous artificial dermis insertion procedures.
As such, the court determined the compensation for the mental damage suffered by the victim to be around $15,000. In addition, the doctor was ordered to compensate 60% of the direct damages, including medical and hospitalization costs, amounting to approximately $5,750, about $3,430. The total amount is approximately $18,430.
The doctor appealed the first instance decision on the 14th.
