The South Korean Unification Ministry responded to foreign media reports claiming that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has a firstborn son and illegitimate children, stating, “There is no content to confirm.”
Unification Ministry spokesperson Koo Byung Sam answered a question in a regular briefing at the Government Complex in Seoul on the 26th, stating, “A British media outlet reported, citing a former intelligence agency member, that Kim has a firstborn son, and in addition to Kim Ju Ae, there are two illegitimate children.”
The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, reported on the 23rd (local time) that a former intelligence agency member named Choi Soo Yong said, “The appearance of the firstborn son is physically unattractive, so Kim is not revealing him to the public.” Choi cited North Korean sources, saying, “Unlike his well-built and plumped father and sister, the son is said to be pale and thin,” and “It is known that the son does not resemble his great-grandfather, Kim Il Sung, at all.”
There have been previous claims that Kim has a son. The National Intelligence Service reported to the National Assembly’s Intelligence Committee in March last year, “There is no concrete evidence, but we are confident through information sharing with foreign intelligence agencies that the first child is a son.” Meanwhile, Choi claimed that Kim Jong Un’s heirs are his firstborn son and Ju Ae, and there are two more illegitimate children whose genders are not known.
