The London home where legendary rock band Queen’s member Freddie Mercury used to live has been listed for sale at 30 million pounds (approximately 41.1 million USD).
The Times and Sky News reported on the 27th (local time) that the two-story house “Garden Lodge” in the Kensington area of West London, where Freddie Mercury lived until his last days, has been listed for sale.
Garden Lodge, constructed in 1907, featured charming wooden furniture, yellow wallpaper, and a modest garden, earning it the nickname “country house in the heart of London.”
Mercury bought this house in 1980 and lived there until he died of AIDS-related complications in 1991. After his death, his former lover and friend, Mary Austin, moved into the house and lived there with her family. After her children grew up and moved out, she lived there alone.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Austin explained the reason for selling the house, saying, “The property is under my name, but it’s always been Freddie’s. It was his dream and vision,” and added, “I think it’s time for me to move on to a new chapter in my life.”
Meanwhile, Austin sold about 1,500 items from the house at an auction held at Sotheby’s in London last September, raising over 39 million pounds. In particular, the green garden gate, covered with fan tribute messages, was sold for 412,000 pounds.
Some of the proceeds have reportedly been donated to AIDS-related organizations established by surviving members of Queen.
