Tesla’s Warning: Cybertruck Resellers Risk Losing Orders and More

newautopost Views

Tesla Cybertruck delivery may take up to 5 years,
with strict penalties for reselling attempts

Tesla’s Cybertruck, a pickup truck, commands a high price of about $100,000. Yet, there’s a staggering 5-year wait for delivery if you place an order today, primarily due to Tesla’s production not keeping up with the demand.

As a result, there have naturally been vehicle owners in the used market who are looking to sell their spots for a premium. However, Tesla does not want the Cybertruck to be traded at a significantly higher price than the list price, and thus, they have explicitly stated a no-resale clause. It was thought to be just a verbal warning, but there are actual cases where orders have been cancelled for attempting to resell.

If caught reselling, a minimum fine of $54,000 is imposed
Indeed, there was an owner who got caught

Currently, Tesla specifies in the Cybertruck contract a prohibition on reselling without Tesla’s permission. Specifically, ‘If the owner attempts to resell without Tesla’s permission, Tesla can apply for an injunction to prevent the transfer of ownership or charge the owner a fee of more than $54,000.’

It would have been good if all owners could receive their vehicles normally by complying with this clause, but there was one owner who couldn’t resist the temptation to resell. Marlin Central, a member of the Cybertruck Owners Club, listed his Cybertruck for sale and was caught by Tesla.

Even showing the intent to sell is enough to get caught

He explained, “I didn’t sell the car. I just wanted to see the reactions,” but Tesla showed no mercy. He eventually had two of his Cybertruck orders cancelled by Tesla. He was also informed that future orders would be cancelled without refunding the order fee.

The reason for his order cancellation was the no-resale clause stipulated by Tesla. Tesla includes the cancellation conditions when the vehicle sale is detected, when the owner shows intentions to sell, or when Tesla is certain that the owner intends to sell.

Yet, reselling continues
How many resellers will be fined?

Despite this, it is not difficult to find Cybertruck listings. A few used car sites in the US openly list Tesla Cybertrucks for sale. All listings boast prices significantly higher than the original, with the cheapest vehicle priced at over $216,000, more than double the original price.

Tesla has stated that it will charge the higher amount between the amount received from the sale and $54,000. Moreover, they briefly removed the clause regarding reselling at the end of last year but restored it not long after. Let’s watch how many resellers Tesla will fine.
