Porsche’s first pure electric sports car, the Taycan, sets a new milestone in the luxury electric car market by surpassing 100,000 units produced in 2022. Was Mercedes, having watched the success of the Panamera and created the AMG-GT sedan, once again inspired by the Taycan? They are currently developing an electric car in a four-door coupe style.

The new high-performance electric sedan from AMG was under a veil until a few days ago when it was first spotted on the road. Although most of it is covered by a camouflage wrap, the overall silhouette is discernible. Also, it’s said to draw attention with its uniquely shaped taillights. Let’s take a closer look at this vehicle.

The prototype has arrived, previewed by the Vision AMG concept car

Mercedes announced the Vision AMG concept in 2022, hinting at the next-generation high-performance electric car. Philipp Schiemer, the CEO of Mercedes-AMG, said about this car, “The Vision AMG shows in a glamorous style how the electrification of Mercedes-AMG will take place while remaining faithful to the brand’s aesthetics,” shedding light on the direction AMG will take.

Two years later, the Vision AMG concept car is much closer to mass production, as Mercedes has shared a few prototype photos. Spy photographers from Carscoops also secured photos of the prototype being tested.

Does the taillight resemble the Mazda Miata’s design?

Although the captured vehicle is covered in a camouflage wrap, a few features can be discerned. First, the exterior design draws inspiration from the Vision AMG concept car. While the EQS, one of Mercedes’ representative electric sedans, had a somewhat high roofline and awkward proportions, the AMG GT EV adopts the posture of a genuine, low-slung sports car.

The headlights bear a triangular shape similar to those on the EQS, and the taillights amusingly resemble those of a Mazda Miata. However, this is likely a temporary design. True to its EV nature, the front is completely covered with a camouflage wrap, showing no separate grill, and two different wheel designs are applied to the front and rear, leaving the final design undecided.

Expected to deliver over 832 horsepower and launch in 2025

The AMG GT EV will use the specially designed EA architecture for high-performance pure electric AMG models. This was announced during the concept car phase. According to the released report, a lightweight electric motor from the UK’s YASA and a high-density battery pack from America’s Sila Nanotechnologies are expected to be used. Although there are no confirmed details about the power output, it’s expected to surpass the 832 horsepower of the AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC E Performance.

The AMG GT EV is set to debut in 2025. Upon its launch, it’s expected to challenge the reigning champion of high-performance electric sedans, the Porsche Taycan. This car will be the pure electric version of the existing AMG-GT sedan, offering consumers a new choice. The name of the AMG GT EV has not yet been confirmed, and it’s intriguing to guess what it will be called.
