5 Scenic Spots to Catch Cherry Blossoms in Hokkaido

Hokkaido, Japan, is where you can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms starting in May. This year, the first bloom is expected to appear around April 29. As late spring unfolds, Hokkaido becomes the perfect place to see cherry blossoms in full bloom. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, it could be a great idea to witness the last cherry blossoms of the season in Hokkaido.

Maruyama Park in Sapporo is an expansive park in the city. It is home to the Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Zoo. From late April to early May, you can see a spectacle of cherry blossoms in full bloom. As May arrives, cherry blossoms reach their peak, attracting numerous visitors to Maruyama Park.

The park is also great for sitting on the grass and enjoying a picnic. When the cherry blossom season begins, locals flock to Maruyama Park to appreciate the flowers.

To visit Maruyama Park, you can get off at Maruyama Park Station on the subway Tozai Line and walk for about 5 minutes.

Nakajima Park in Sapporo is located next to Susukino. It’s a resting place for citizens located in the city center. Nakajima Park offers various attractions that bring joy to its visitors. From the Hokkaido Shrine Festival in summer to skiing on rented equipment in winter, the park provides diverse entertainment throughout the year.

The park transforms into a captivating canvas with fully bloomed cherry blossoms as spring unfolds. The park is home to around 400 cherry trees, including mountain cherry trees and double cherry trees. With its Japanese-style garden, Western-style buildings, and artificial pond, there are plenty of sights to see while enjoying the cherry blossoms.

Nakajima Park is easily accessible, located right in front of Nakajima Koen Station on the subway.

The Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom is Japan’s largest cherry blossom driving course. It is the only avenue in Hokkaido, located about 1 hour and 30 minutes away by car from the New Chitose Airport Terminal.

Along the road, 2,200 cherry trees are lined up in a row. The Cherry Blossom Drive course is about 4.3 miles long, offering a captivating sight for visitors. The Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots” and “100 Best Roads in Japan.” it’s hailed as one of the nation’s premier cherry blossom destinations.

The Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival is held during the peak cherry blossom season, from late April to early May. If you visit during this time, you can fully experience the spring of Hokkaido. A walking path running parallel to the road provides an excellent opportunity for a leisurely stroll amidst the cherry blossoms.

Matsumae Park is a quintessential cherry blossom destination in Hokkaido. It’s where Matsumae Castle, the first Japanese-style castle in Hokkaido, is located. Matsumae Park has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots” in Japan, and it offers a breathtaking panorama of cherry blossoms.

From late April to mid-May, Matsumae Park is filled with flowers. The park is adorned with approximately 250 varieties and over 10,000 cherry trees. You can enjoy the spectacle of cherry blossoms in harmony with the majestic Matsumae Castle.

Nestled in the southern expanse of Hokkaido, It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes by bus from Kikonai Station. You can easily reach the park via the Shinkansen or Minami Hokkaido Railway.

Oniushi Park in Morimachi is a cherry blossom travel destination. When spring comes, even locals visit the park to see the cherry blossoms. Housing 19 varieties and 500 cherry trees, Oniushi Park boasts a collection of rare species indigenous to Morimachi, making it a more special cherry blossom destination. In particular, Komamizakura is a cherry blossom crossbreed of Horiizakura and King Cherry Tree, offering a more abundant cherry blossom experience.

To visit Oniushi Park in Morimachi, you must walk about 10 minutes from Mori Station on the JR Hokkaido Hakodate Line.
