On April 16, Volvo Car Korea announced that Volvo’s flagship SUV model, the XC90, had not caused a single fatal accident in the UK for 16 years since 2002.

The XC90 is a model that has upgraded the safety system provided by the Volvo brand. This is because Volvo’s latest technology, which helps ensure drivers’ and passengers’ safety, was first introduced in the XC90. Rollover prevention system (RSC) in 2002, intersection collision detection and emergency braking system in 2014, and road departure protection system in 2014 were first applied to the XC90. The XC90 is a culmination of the Volvo brand’s safety philosophy.

IntelliSafe applied as standard

The XC90, currently on sale, also received the highest rating, Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+), in a crash safety test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the U.S. Under the brand philosophy that safety cannot be an option, Volvo installs the advanced intelligent safety system IntelliSafe as standard on all XC90 trims.

IntelliSafe consists of the following safety features: Pilot Assist II maintains a distance from the car in front and drives at a maximum of 140 km/h (87 mph) by centering the lane; City Safety provides steering support and emergency braking when it detects suddenly appearing vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, or large animals; and It Avoids collisions with vehicles approaching the opposite lane, etc.

In addition, it is equipped with a 24-hour Volvo Assistant service that reports accidents and requests emergency dispatch with just one button in an emergency.

Sales Continue to Increase

The XC90 will be equipped with the T-map infotainment system jointly developed with T-map Mobility by Volvo Cars, which is investing 30 billion won (about $ 21.73 million). It is a system that integrates navigation T-map, artificial intelligence (AI) platform NUGU, and user preference-based music platform FLO. In addition, it supports free over-the-air updates (OTA) for 15 years and provides a digital service package (5 years) to assist a convenient mobility experience.

According to data released by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA), Volvo sold 1,081 units in March 2024, increasing sales by 12.5% compared to the previous month (961 units). A Volvo Car Korea official said, “There is steady demand from consumers looking for safe family SUVs.” He added, “The cumulative sales volume in the first quarter of 2024 was 3,007 units, of which the combined sales volume of the XC60 and XC90 reached a whopping 1,591 units (accounting for 53% of the total).”
