Great Wall Motor’s Ambitious SUV Venture Draws Global Attention

newautopost Views

China, with frequent new vehicle launches
Recently from Great Wall Motor (GWM) brand
TANK 500 model launched

China, a country where we hear news of new vehicle launches every other day. This time, the news is that China’s leading SUV manufacturer, Great Wall Motor (GWM), is launching a new model of the large SUV Tank 500 Hi4-T. The biggest change appears to be the installation of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain in a previously released model that was popular in China.

Even when it was first launched, it was criticized for resembling Japanese and American SUVs. Not only the model in question but most of the vehicles recently released in China appear similar to the extent of incorporating vehicles from other brands, leading to constant controversy worldwide except in China. Let’s take a look at the controversial vehicle now.

Sold only in China and Russia
Launch of a new PHEV model

Tank 500, launched in China in August 2021, is currently sold only in China and Russia. It is a large SUV that can accommodate up to seven people. When it was first launched it showed good performance for a Chinese-made off-roader and was popular in its own country. The initial model was equipped with a V6 gasoline engine and produced an output of 360 horsepower. Afterwards, performance was improved and various powertrains were installed, and eventually a plug-in hybrid model will be released.

The PHEV model to be released this time is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 59.05 kWh and can secure a driving range of nearly 200 km (124 miles). Complete Vehicle Kerb Weight has increased from 2,830 kg (6,239 lbs) to 2,980 kg (6,569 lbs) due to the increased battery capacity. The engine is the same Miller cycle E20NB engine installed in the 2024 model. Another prominent feature of the new model is that it is offered with full-time four-wheel drive.

Vehicle performance is recognized
Design plagiarism, half success

As described, the vehicle’s performance is acceptable, with no significant defects. However, the problem lies in the vehicle’s design. The front grille resembles an American SUV like a Ram or GMC. In addition, some people do not hesitate to criticize strongly that it is a replica of the Toyota Land Cruiser and a mixture of several vehicles.

No matter how excellent the performance is, if the design fails to capture the brand’s unique language, it can only be said to be half-successful. In that respect, Great Wall MMotor’s Tank 500 could not avoid criticism from other manufacturers and countries.

Closed export tendency

The response to plagiarized designs feels even more insensitive since it is a Chinese domestic model and is not being launched in other countries except Russia. There has been no news of its release in South Korea or other countries, so it is unclear whether it will be available in those markets.
