Inappropriate Timing? Man Announces Engagement at Sister’s Funeral

After announcing his engagement at his half-sister’s funeral, a man has stirred up controversy.

On April 18, a man posted on an international online community, “I waited until my half-sister’s funeral was almost over to announce my engagement, and now I’m being criticized by my family. What did I do wrong?”

The 19-year-old man, who lives in a different area from his family, proposed to his girlfriend and got engaged shortly before his 14-year-old half-sister died.

However, his half-sister passed away not long after. He wanted to tell his family right away, but he decided to “wait until everyone had overcome the pain of losing my sister.”

He and his girlfriend traveled to where his family lives for the funeral. Since most of his family lived in different areas, it was rare for them all to gather in one place. Thus, he thought it was the “perfect timing to announce the engagement.”

As the funeral was winding down, he noticed the mood among the attendees improving and thought it was the “perfect opportunity to share the good news with family and other guests.”

He then made a toast and officially announced his engagement to his girlfriend. Contrary to his expectation of cheers and congratulations, the room fell silent.

“A few minutes later, my half-sister’s boyfriend asked to speak with me outside. When I went out, my half-sisters were crying,” he said. They asked him, “Why do you always make everything about you? Can’t you think of others for even one day?”

Other relatives, his mother, and stepfather all coldly told him and his girlfriend to “leave and never come back.” He also received text messages from multiple people criticizing his behavior, and a few said they would not attend his wedding. He confessed, “I don’t understand what I did wrong.”

Viewers online who read his post criticized him, with comments such as, “How could you ever think that was a good idea?”, “Your family calling you self-centered means you’ve done this kind of thing before,” and “Try announcing your divorce at a baby’s 100-day celebration.”
