Recently, various car keys have been introduced, including digital keys that enable you to open your car using a cellphone and key cards that allow access with a simple card swipe or tap. These innovations offer convenience and security to meet modern driving needs.
However, a security company announced shocking research results on Tesla key cards. They use ultra-wideband (UWB) radio frequencies, are quite vulnerable to hacking and are highly susceptible to theft. Meanwhile, it is said that the theft of vehicles using digital keys or key cards can be prevented with a very simple method.
Tesla has enhanced security by using ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless signals in several new vehicles, including the Model 3. However, a Chinese cyber security company called GoGoByte claims that a relay attack can still steal a Tesla’s radio signal.
GoGoByte, a Beijing-based company, tested a relay attack to hack three brands of vehicles, including Tesla, and revealed that hacking was easy. Automakers using key cards or wireless signals must strengthen their security.
Some media showed how a Tesla vehicle could be easily hacked using a relay attack from a location about 4 m (157.5 inches) away. GoGoByte founder Li Jun said, “Simply enabling ultra-wideband doesn’t mean your vehicle won’t be stolen,” he added, “Tesla will address the security issue at some stage, but the public should also be aware of it.”
The simplest way to prevent vehicle theft through hacking is to block wireless signals by keeping the key card in the case. People who try to steal vehicles through hacking attempt to use a relay device to intercept the wireless signal emitted from the original key. In response to this, it is said that hacking can be prevented simply by putting the key card in a wallet or special case.
Another way to prevent theft is to use Tesla’s Pin To Drive feature. When this function is activated, the driver must enter a 4-digit PIN before driving the vehicle. Although this is said to prevent driving, it is not a method to prevent hacking, such as direct relay attacks.
Meanwhile, Tesla and Hyundai have introduced a button-type smart key card that retains essential smart functions such as door locks, remote start, and trunk opening. For those using a Tesla or Hyundai key card, it is advisable to carry it in a protective case to prevent theft, adding an extra layer of security to the innovative technology.
