New news from BMW M
Is the plug-in hybrid SUV XM discontinued?
Let’s find out more news and outlook
Due to its significant differentiation from regular models, BMW’s high-performance Division M is one of the brands enthusiasts immensely love. It has a reputation as a driving machine that maximizes the fun of driving, as the lightweight body and high-performance Silky Six engine match particularly well.
However, the growing trend towards electrification has sparked interest in eco-friendly powertrains, presenting a modern challenge for BMW’s M division to tackle. Various powertrain options, including hybrid and electric, are now available in M models. The XM, the first M-specific model since the M1, has sparked controversy since its introduction. Recently, however, new developments have emerged concerning this model.
XM to be Discontinued after 2028
There Was a Reason for the Discontinuation News
According to reports from international BMW representatives and the American automotive media outlet Automotive News, the XM might be discontinued without a successor. Typically, when a vehicle reaches the end of its life cycle, it undergoes a facelift or is fully redesigned. However, it has been revealed that there will be no successor model for the XM.
The news also hints that BMW XM will cease production from November 2028. Despite being born with a unique concept as a plug-in hybrid SUV model equipped with a V8 engine, it will face the humiliation of being discontinued with only one model without a successor.
An identity that does not fit M
Point out price and declining competitiveness
The industry and consumers pointed out that the reason for the discontinuation of XM was a concept that did not fit BMW’s identity. The SUV’s shape did not suit the BMW M, and its curb weight was hefty. Other reasons include insufficient appeal for the product and differentiation compared to competing models of the same segment.
The BMW XM’s high price point, starting at around $159,995 and reaching up to $185,995, makes it a significant investment even for enthusiasts of the M-division vehicles. This pricing has impacted sales figures; less than 2,000 units were sold in the US market last year, and reports indicate that only about 500 units were sold in the first quarter of 2024.
There is no definite information yet
BMW reorganizes its portfolio
Although nothing has been decided yet, both BMW M officials and consumers have negative perceptions and unclear prospects for XM. Instead, a new pure electric SUV using the Neue Klasse platform will likely be launched in 2028 after XM is discontinued.
Since nothing has been confirmed recently regarding the discontinuation of the BMW 4 Series or the re-emergence of the 6 Series, it can be difficult to conclude. However, one thing is sure: BMW is currently reorganizing its portfolio, and BMW may change its plans according to changes in the market through continuous updates.
