Porsche’s Entry Model 718
Popular as a midship sports car
Recently, there was news that it was discontinued
Porsche can be said to be the dream car that everyone dreams of at least once. Due to their high prices and maintenance costs, people who cannot easily purchase the most representative vehicles, such as the 911, Panamera, or Cayenne, purchase slightly cheaper entry-level cars, such as the 718 Boxster, Cayman, and Macan.
Prices have risen significantly, with the entire lineup now exceeding $60,000. Previously, the base model, without any options, was priced under $60,000, earning its reputation as an attainable dream car. This model is particularly popular for its mid-engine sports car design. However, recent news has caused a stir among enthusiasts.
After 2025, pure electric vehicles will discontinue and replace combustion engines
Motor1 reported discontinuing Porsche’s entry-level internal combustion engine models, the 718 Boxster and Cayman. It is said that the existing model will be discontinued in 2025, and only pure electric vehicles will be sold after that. As of July, it has already been impossible to purchase internal combustion engine vehicles, Boxster and Cayman, due to failure to meet Europe’s new cybersecurity regulations (regulations related to vehicle hacking), but they will disappear completely after 2025.
According to Porsche officials, production of the model is expected to be discontinued around mid-2025. After the discontinuation, a pure electric model was announced, and it was predicted that it would provide as much enjoyment as the charm of an internal combustion engine vehicle. The launch dates for the Cayman EV and Boxster EV have not been precisely determined, but it is said that the Boxster EV will be launched earlier.
Currently, they are not available in Europe, and The Macan’s internal combustion engine version will be discontinued in 2026
Accordingly, he added that the 718’s production line will be converted into a facility for electric vehicle production. After discontinuing the 718, the next target for discontinuation is Macan’s internal combustion engine version, which is expected to be discontinued in mid-2026. Currently, the internal combustion engine version of the Porsche Macan is available for purchase in some countries except Europe.
However, industry experts predict that the discontinuation of internal combustion engines will accelerate as the supply of parts gradually decreases. Turning back doesn’t seem easy, especially as European regulations become increasingly stringent. Since the 718 and Macan sales accounted for a significant portion of Porsche’s sales in 2023, some damage is expected immediately after discontinuation.
Concerns over Porsche’s complete electrification
The majority opinion is that Porsche will gradually achieve full electrification after 2026 by electrifying its lineup. As the global electric vehicle market is experiencing a recession and several manufacturers are delaying electrification, some are concerned about Porsche’s actions.
Meanwhile, Porsche recently introduced the Macan Electric. It is based on the PPE platform and produces a maximum of 639 horsepower from 408 horsepower with a 100 kWh battery. The Boxster EV, scheduled for launch in 2025, is also based on the same platform as the Macan and is expected to secure a driving range of up to 500 km (311 miles).
