Counterfeit goods pose a perennial challenge in the luxury goods industry. These fake items, often called replicas, are prevalent across all types of products, and even supercars are not immune. Ferrari, a brand synonymous with supercars, is particularly vigilant about counterfeit products because its product range extends beyond vehicles. This sensitivity is crucial as it strives to protect the integrity and exclusivity of its brand across various categories.

Ferrari is notorious for having strict contract clauses that prohibit even tuning its vehicles. It is clear what action was taken against counterfeit products bearing the company’s logo. Ferrari, which has been waging a “war against counterfeits” for a long time, is attracting attention by disclosing statistics on its counterfeit products destroyed in 2023.

Last year, 400,000 were detected
Including 3 Ferrari supercars

On July 4, 2024, Ferrari released an infographic about counterfeit Ferrari products detected in 2024 through social media X (formerly Twitter). The number of counterfeit products detected and discarded by Ferrari in 2023 is shocking, reaching as many as 400,000. Among these, clothing accounted for the most significant proportion at 100,351 items, followed by sunglasses (91,229 items), wristwatches (60,903 items), wallets (57,503 items), and perfume (30,161 items).

There are some surprising reactions, such as “How could Ferrari sell such a variety of products?” but something else catches the eye more than anything else. It is a vehicle that is Ferrari’s flagship product. According to statistics, three vehicles were included among the counterfeit products detected in 2023. One is said to have been of such high quality that it was difficult to distinguish it from the entry-level supercar 360 Modena launched in 1999.

Only those intended for sale

There are already countless examples of Ferrari replicas being produced. The production process of replicas is posted through various online media, and some are surprising in appearance, similar to actual vehicles. Of course, Ferrari did not detect and destroy all such cars. Ferrari makes an exception for vehicles manufactured for personal driving and only finds and destroys vehicles with clear evidence that they were manufactured for sale.

“Counterfeiters are becoming increasingly sophisticated,” said Carlo Daneo, General Counsel at Ferrari. And, he said, “Some vehicles are so well made that they end up being auctioned off, and our job is to get them off the market.” “It is not enough to just withdraw from the market. We want to destroy all counterfeit products,” he added.

Offering rewards to informants

He claims that counterfeiters’ technology for manufacturing Ferrari replicas is gradually improving. To achieve a higher level of perfection, there have also been reports of cases where a top model or limited edition Ferrari body was created based on a relatively inexpensive entry-level Ferrari. Accordingly, Ferrari is even operating an anti-counterfeit compensation system that compensates those who report the sale of counterfeit products.

Who writes this crap? Totally incorrect headline claiming 400,000 fake vehicles destroyed last year when immediately beneath it there is data showing just 3 were destroyed.

  • Wes

Jeez, Replicas are a part of life, as long as they don't bear a logo it should be allowed.
