New details have emerged about the Skytop Roadster, which BMW first unveiled in May 2024. This two-seater luxury concept car draws inspiration from BMW’s legendary roadsters, the Z8 and 503, both of which are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. The concept car is based on the large coupe 8 Series and was showcased again at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, held in the UK from July 11 to July 14.
As BMW has recently been leading the charge in active electrification, the possibility of mass-producing the Skytop concept car, based on the 8 Series internal combustion engine, seemed unlikely. However, BMW’s chief designer, Adrian Van Hooydonk, attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed and reignited hopes for its production. Let’s take a closer look at the news that was released.
Skytop to be Unveiled After Much Deliberation
Limited Production of 50 Units, Likely to Exceed $500,000
First, it was reported that BMW had two opposing opinions regarding the potential mass production of the Skytop concept car: one group advocated for mass production, while the other preferred to maintain its exclusivity as a concept car. After extensive internal discussions, the decision leaned towards pursuing mass production, and it was revealed that this goal is now approaching reality.
The Skytop will be sold for around $546,000 unless any other changes exist. However, according to the information, a limited production of 50 units would be carried out. Although it feels too expensive for an 8 Series-based vehicle, BMW is emphasizing its uniqueness.
It is unlikely that this model will be sold in the US market, and it is assumed that it will probably be sold first in Europe. The realistic answer was that it would take about a year from launch to customer delivery.
This is the first officially announced information since May 2024, which is highly credible. Detailed performance and specifications were not disclosed, but it will be equipped with the same 617 horsepower 4.4L V8 engine as the M8 Competition model. The time it takes to reach 100 km/h from a standstill is expected to be around 3.0 seconds. Although it is a limited edition model priced at over €500,000, it is disappointing that it does not offer exceptional performance.
Mercedes-Benz Also Launches Mythos Purespeed
Enters the Luxury Roadster Competition
Although the specific production schedule has not been revealed, industry officials predict that additional detailed news about production will be delivered within a year. If the Skytop is officially launched, a luxury car similar to the high-end luxury speedster AMG Mythos Purespeed previously unveiled by Mercedes-Benz will appear.
The Mythos Purespeed is also an AMG SL-based vehicle and is highly rare as it is a limited production model of only 250 units. In terms of performance, it is superior to Skytop. Specifically, it has a base output of 585 horsepower, and in the case of the top model SE Performance, it generates a combined output of 816 horsepower with a V8 engine and PHEV. Attention is being paid to whether the mass production of the BMW Skytop will allow the luxury roadster competition between BMW and Mercedes-Benz to begin in earnest.
