What changes can we expect?

Volvo’s flagship SUV, the XC90, has earned the title of the safest SUV and is renowned for its cutting-edge technology. It outshines many German rivals. The XC90 offers various powertrains, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid options. However, the diesel variant is no longer available.

Despite this, the XC90 maintains its prestigious reputation and performance. A teaser image of the vehicle, scheduled for its second facelift unveiling on September 4, 2024, was leaked recently. This early glimpse has allowed us to see the updated design before the official release. What does it reveal?

The most significant changes are in the front
While retaining its original appearance

Now deleted, photos of the second facelift version of the XC90 briefly appeared on Volvo Switzerland’s official social media account. Some caught wind of the gap and began to spread it quickly. Although only a few photos were leaked, they revealed the updated model’s front, side, and parts of the interior.

The most striking part is the front. The slightly sleeker front headlights and the uniquely patterned grille are impressive. Features that show the distinct identity of the existing model, such as the daytime running lights that represent Thor’s hammer, have been preserved while being newly refined.

As it is not a full-change model, the overall silhouette is not much different from the current model. However, as described above, the details, such as the change in the front and the volume created through the bonnet, have changed significantly. In particular, this facelift model has become more similar to other models, such as the XC60 and EX90.

There are no major changes to the side and rear except for the wheel design, chrome garnish, etc. In particular, the rear has the same configuration as the current model, including the vertical tail lamp and rear bumper. As for the interior, the change in the size of the center display is noticeable. It appears to have been replaced by a 9.1-inch screen, with a screen estimated to be around 12 inches.

Expect a single hybrid trim with significant improvements in marketability and details

While maintaining Volvo’s signature minimalist layout, efforts to differentiate it from the existing model can be seen in the air vents’ design and chrome decorations. Parts such as the crystal knob gear and digital cluster are expected to be the same as before.

Meanwhile, the upcoming XC90 facelift model will feature a new hybrid system. It will likely be operated as a single plug-in hybrid trim without any other powertrain and will utilize a 2.0L gasoline turbo engine, battery, and electric motor.
