The viral Shiziguan Floating Bridge, or the Bridge of Dreams, is a 400-meter-long bridge spanning the Qingjiang River in Hubei Province, China.
The bridge uses high-density polyethylene floats that are filled with water to enhance stability and German technology to prevent vehicles from overturning while in motion. It has a weight limit of 2.8 tons and a speed limit of 20 km/h (approximately 12.4 mph), allowing drivers to feel only the gentle river flow if they adhere to speed restrictions.
Despite these advances, a tragic incident occurred in 2023 when a multipurpose vehicle carrying eight passengers suddenly broke through the bridge’s railing and plunged into the river.
The accident resulted in five fatalities, while three individuals managed to escape the vehicle and swim to safety. Although the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, security footage captured the vehicle swaying violently as it crossed the bridge.
The floating bridge temporarily closed following the accident but has since reopened, attracting many tourists.
While this bridge offers a unique driving experience over the Qingjiang River, all users must remember the lessons from the accident and adhere to weight and speed limits for safety.
This incident reminds us of the dangers that can arise when one becomes complacent amidst nature’s beauty. While the floating bridge remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, all users must strictly follow safety regulations while on it.
