Tesla Cybertruck Faces Another Recall: This Time, It’s a Rear Camera Issue!

Tesla Cybertruck Faces Another Defect
This Time, It’s a Rear Camera Issue
Five Recalls in One Year

Reddit

Since its launch, the Tesla Cybertruck has been a polarizing topic in the automotive world. Known for its futuristic design and unique features, the truck initially saw prices for used models soar to more than double that of new ones. Those shortages have mostly been resolved with increased production and the introduction of an entry-level version. However, early Cybertruck owners are becoming increasingly frustrated with the vehicle, as it has now been subject to five recalls within one year.

These recalls have ranged from minor inconveniences to severe safety concerns. The latest issue, involving a rear camera delay, has added to the Cybertruck’s growing list of problems, earning it the unwanted title of one of the most recalled vehicles of the year.

Eight-Second Delay When Shifting to Reverse
Fortunately, No Accidents Reported

The most recent recall revolves around the Cybertruck’s rear-view camera, which is experiencing significant delays in displaying the video feed when shifting into reverse. According to U.S. federal law, rear-view cameras must activate within two seconds of engaging in reverse gear. However, cybertruck owners have reported delays of as long as six to eight seconds.

This delay poses a potential safety risk, as drivers often begin reversing as soon as they shift gears, unaware that the rear camera feed has not yet appeared. This delay could lead to accidents or cause frustration among other drivers in crowded parking lots. Tesla has received four field reports and 45 warranty claims related to the rear camera issue, but fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported.

Essentially, a Full Recall
Can Be Resolved via OTA Update

Tesla has stated that the rear camera issue is linked to the system’s boot-up process, where the camera image does not display immediately during the startup phase. This problem affects approximately 27,000 Cybertrucks that have been delivered so far. Tesla will begin notifying affected owners about the recall on November 25.

Fortunately, the issue can be addressed through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, meaning owners won’t need to visit a Tesla service center. Tesla has previously used OTA technology to resolve issues and enhance features, and this rear camera problem is expected to be fixed similarly.

Revisiting Previous Recall Cases
Significant Safety Issues Also Existed

This recall of the rear camera follows several other significant issues with the Cybertruck. In April, Tesla recalled Cybertrucks due to a defect with the accelerator pedal cover, which could detach and get stuck in the interior trim, potentially causing sudden, unintended acceleration. Then, in June 2024, a large-scale recall affecting all 22,000 Cybertrucks delivered at the time addressed defects with the windshield wiper and cargo bed trim parts.
