BMW’s Latest $800K Masterpiece for the Privileged Few: Only 50 Units to Be Produced

In May, BMW first unveiled its Skytop concept, a sleek two-seater roadster with design nods to the iconic Z8 Roadster and 503. Rumors suggest that BMW plans to produce this beauty in limited quantities, capped at just 50 units, making it one of the most exclusive models in its lineup.

According to reports, all 50 Skytop units have already been quietly sold to BMW’s VIP customers. The sales were handled discreetly, with pricing details kept under wraps. For context, BMW’s 3.0 CSL, which was also limited to 50 units, fetched a retail price of $822,000—giving us a rough idea of the Skytop’s potential price tag.

Exquisite Design: Shark Nose, Elegant Curves, and a Luxurious Finish

Afterward, the 3.0 CSL was sold at an auction for $1.35 million, which is about 50% more expensive. Accordingly, Skytop’s production model is also expected to be priced at around $800,000. Meanwhile, consumers are also focused on expensive limited edition BMW models. BMW Group Chief Designer Adrian van Hooydonk said, “BMW Skytop offers an exotic design with the highest level of driving dynamics and elegance.”

The exterior features a shark-nose front, sharply designed headlamps, and a curved bonnet. The front kidney grille has a chrome garnish to enhance the sense of luxury. The bumper has a wide air intake divided into three parts. A horizontal, sharp garnish is placed narrowly between the air intakes to emphasize the sporty image.

The Skytop’s side profile reveals a semi-open driver’s seat, with the roof removed to expose the cockpit fully. The rear smoothly transitions into the car’s signature lines. The taillights echo the design of the Z8, with elongated horizontal lamps extending into the rear quarter panels. The rear end is almost vertical, housing a round muffler tip that adds to the car’s striking appearance.

The flat rear end falls almost vertically, and a round muffler tip is placed on the bumper. One of BMW’s most experienced master painters was in charge of the exterior color. Based on the silver color, the rear end is reddish brown, forming a gradation with the silver. A soft leather top was applied for the Targa top roof.

Performance and Pricing: Skytop Packs 617 Horsepower

Under the hood, the Skytop borrows heavily from the M8 Competition. It features a 4.4L V8 twin-turbo engine paired with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This powertrain, combined with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, delivers a whopping 617 horsepower. The Skytop sprints from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds, cementing its status as a high-performance machine.

Inside, the Skytop’s cabin takes cues from the 8 Series, with a digital instrument cluster, a large display, an electronic gear lever, and a premium M leather steering wheel.

While the Skytop is still a concept, some design tweaks may occur before the production models roll out. However, with only 50 units slated for production, it’s already set to become one of BMW’s rarest cars. Considering that a 3.0 CSL recently sold at auction for $1.35 million, it’s expected that the Skytop could fetch around $1.45 million, should one ever hit the auction block.
