Why the $60,000 Cybertruck Isn’t Selling Like Tesla Hoped

When Tesla’s Cybertruck debuted, it created a storm of attention with its futuristic design that seemed straight out of a sci-fi film. Celebrities, including South Korean superstar GD, proudly flaunted the truck before its official launch in many regions, amplifying its popularity. At its peak, Cybertruck reservations exceeded 1 million, with eager buyers willing to wait years for delivery. But fast forward a year, and the narrative has shifted dramatically.

Declining Demand: A Sudden Reversal

Now, consumers can get their Cybertrucks as soon as they order them. Why? People who had reserved Cybertrucks have canceled them without actually purchasing them. Tesla expanded the Cybertruck’s initial model to Canada and Mexico to maintain demand, but demand in the United States has continued to decline.

At the beginning of the launch, consumers who wanted to receive the car quickly, even if they had to pay extra, could now do so at no extra cost and right after ordering. Tesla’s Giga Texas factory, where the Cybertruck is made, has an annual production capacity of 125,000 units. However, Tesla is not even close to reaching this target.

Tesla’s Cybertruck Inventory Grows as Pickup Demand Softens

By the end of September, Tesla had an estimated 8,000 Cybertruck units in stock, a concerning figure for a vehicle that once boasted over a million reservations. Industry analysts suggest that Tesla may have missed an opportunity to sustain profitability by ending sales of the entry-level Cybertruck Foundation series sooner. The lingering inventory has led to gradual price reductions, which, while appealing to buyers, raise questions about whether Tesla can maintain profitability into the fourth quarter after a strong Q3.

The Cybertruck’s struggles reflect broader challenges in the electric pickup truck segment. Experts note that the $60,000 price point for electric pickups may not be as enticing to consumers as initially believed. Tesla isn’t alone in this. Both Ford and Rivian, key players in the electric pickup market, are also seeing slower sales, signaling a broader cooling of interest in this once-hyped category. This suggests manufacturers may have overestimated demand, prompting an industry-wide reassessment of production and pricing strategies.

Safety: The Cybertruck’s Saving Grace

However, one advantage of the Cybertruck that can overcome all of these points is safety. Tesla’s Cybertruck features a strong appearance that can withstand even a machine gun. Musk famously quipped, “In movies, you sometimes see the hero or heroine hiding behind the car door while being shot with bullets. That doesn’t actually work unless you’re driving a Cybertruck.”

Recent events seem to back up this claim. A serious collision between a Cybertruck and a statue in Mexico left the vehicle heavily damaged. Remarkably, all four occupants survived, with only one sustaining severe injuries. Such incidents highlight the Cybertruck’s resilience and could spark renewed interest as safety becomes a key selling point.
