First unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, Daihatsu’s Tsumu Tsumu mini truck remains a topic of interest among Japanese consumers, even five years later. As one of four concept vehicles introduced at the show, the Tsumu Tsumu was pitched as a next-generation mini truck with versatile applications. Its minimalist exterior design, characteristic of Japanese vehicles, continues to draw attention for its practical and efficient aesthetic.

In the case of Tsumu Tsumu, despite its small size of 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) in length, 1,475 mm (58.1 inches) in width, and 1,850 mm (72.8 inches) in height, the boxy body configuration maximizes the use of space in the interior and cargo area. It doesn’t stop there; the cargo area is designed for multiple purposes, differentiating it from general trucks.

The cargo space is 2,030 mm (79.9 inches) long and can be replaced as a whole, depending on the purpose. It can be used for loading luggage or as a personal interior space, and it is characterized by its multi-purpose use, such as mounting an agricultural drone on top of it. The special configuration does not stop here. The first-row door adopts a two-part method with a hinge in the center.

The door is designed to be folded, so you can open it completely and easily get out, even in narrow alleys. However, the passenger door uses a standard hinge type. In addition, the ground clearance is set close to the floor, so there is an advantage of good interior accessibility when boarding. The interior is simple and practical.

Seats double as makeshift tables
Abundant storage options

The seats have a forward/backward sliding adjustment function and a reclining function, and the passenger seat backrest can be laid forward and used as a simple table. In addition, there is a folding storage box on the dashboard between the driver’s and passenger’s seats, along with ample storage space. You can store plastic bottles and umbrellas on the side of the door.

Behind the seat is a luggage space where you can store things like a toolbox. In the interior, the straight and thin A-pillar, the boxy yet wide side and front glass window, and the high ceiling maximize the sense of openness and space. The gear lever and parking brake are placed next to the steering wheel on the dashboard.

It features a simple structure typical of Japanese vehicles and a boxy exterior design

The driver’s seat, speed, driving information, and infotainment system are integrated into a single full-color display. Even in a limited interior space, all necessary components are provided. It stands out for its practical arrangement within a range where the interior space is not lost as much as possible. The simple layout is applied to the exterior design as well as the interior.

First, for the front, six vertical lamps are spaced out. The design that adds strength to the vertical elements is applied, and the A-pillar is extended to connect to the bumper in a straight line. The design elements are kept to a minimum for the front fascia, and the Daihatsu phrase is only engraved. For the side, the bumper, fender cladding, and side rocker panel garnish are connected in a unified manner. Here, a large, straight door handle is placed to make it easy to grab. For the rear, vertical tail lamps are placed at the bottom of the bumper. The design also reveals the simplicity that is typical of Japanese vehicles.
