Maserati is considered one of Italy’s top three auto manufacturers, along with Ferrari and Lamborghini. The brand has been around for a long time and has produced many famous vehicles. However, at this point in time, there are people who say that the quality and overall perfection are lacking, so the classic models are getting quite a bit of attention.
Modena Automobili in Italy is a company working on a restomod based on old Maserati models. Recently, they selected the Shamal produced in the 1990s as the subject of a restomod and are currently working on a project. Recent photos have been released.
What kind of model is the Maserati Shamal?
The Shamal model may be unfamiliar to us. This is because only 369 units were produced over 6 years, making it quite rare. For reference, the Shamal is a derivative of the Biturbo, launched in 1985. It hit the market in 1990 with its design crafted by Marcello Gandini. Although it is a derivative, all exterior parts except for the doors were newly developed.
As for the interior, it was pretty luxurious for its time. In particular, the seats boasted a different level of luxury by using the highest quality leather from Connolly, which was supplied to Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Ferrari. As for the engine, it was equipped with a 3.2-liter V8 twin-turbo, generating 325 horsepower. In terms of zero to 100 km/h (62 mph), it was very fast for its time at 5.3 seconds. As a reference, the second-generation Ghibli model was developed based on this Shamal.
Let’s take a look at the Shamal that Modena is doing restomod
Here’s a look at the current restored version of Shamal from Modena Automobili. First, the overall exterior design remains the same as the Shamal, but the body kit gives it a sportier feel. The front grille has also been enlarged, and the headlights and taillights use LEDs to add a more modern feel.
The powertrain includes the recently discontinued Ghibli’s 3.0-liter V6 gasoline turbo engine, which generates 404 horsepower. It pairs with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.
Prototype Completion Expected Early Next Year
Maserati Enthusiasts Are Paying Attention
The restored Shamal is set to have its prototype completed by early next year. While the price has not yet been disclosed, considering the vehicle’s value, it is expected to be substantial. Given that only 369 original Shamals were produced and the dwindling number of remaining units, the restored version with some tuning will likely command a high price.
It has a straight-line design that is not often seen in Maserati vehicles and has significant angles, so it receives much attention from enthusiasts who prefer classic Maserati vehicles.
