A fake relationship slowly blossoms into something real in Netflix’s highly anticipated new series, The Trunk.
On Sunday afternoon, MBC’s Let’s Go Video Travel introduced The Trunk, a gripping mystery romance drama quickly capturing attention. The story begins with a chilling discovery: a body found inside a trunk submerged in a frozen lake. The victim is identified as Lee Seo Yeon (played by Jung Yun Ha), and the police quickly turn their focus to two prime suspects – her ex-husband Han Jeong Won (Gong Yoo) and Noh In Ji (Seo Hyun Jin).
Five months earlier, Jeong Won found himself unexpectedly married to another woman. In a fit of rage, he was arrested for smashing a car, only to be confronted by Noh In Ji, who introduced herself as his wife. It was later revealed that In-ji had been living with Jeong Won for a year as part of a temporary marriage arrangement initiated by his ex-wife, Seo Yeon, through a marriage agency called NM.
Thus began their unconventional union. Although they were legally married, Jung-won remained emotionally distant from In Ji. He reluctantly agreed to the arrangement under pressure from Seo Yeon, who threatened to cut ties with him if he didn’t comply.
Their forced cohabitation soon led to a tense incident. When Jeong Won coldly told In Ji, “You can live somewhere else,” she sarcastically replied, “I’m not trying to seduce you.” In a fit of rage, Jung Won threw a beer can at a chandelier, narrowly missing a severe injury. In Ji, trying to protect him, ended up with a severe cut to her arm. Witnessing the injury she sustained because of his actions, Jung Won begins to reassess his feelings toward her.
Fuming, Jung Won remarked, “If it had fallen just an inch to the side, it would have hit me on the head.” In Ji, unfazed, joked, “If my husband dies within a week, my performance review is going to be bad.” As they continued to spar with sarcasm and tension, the two slowly began to open up to one another. But between them stood the shadow of Seo Yeon.
Seo Yeon had become an unwelcome third wheel in their strange marriage. One day, while Jeong Won was settling into married life, he stumbled upon an audio file on In Ji’s phone – an intimate recording of her tangoing with someone. That evening, In Ji teased him, saying, “You can’t tango without a partner,” and encouraged him to dance with her. When she nearly tripped, Jung-won caught her with a kiss, crossing the emotional line they had both carefully avoided.
As the secrets of their temporary marriage start to unravel, their relationship – once ice-cold and transactional – now stands at a crossroads. The emotions that began as a facade have slowly evolved into something more profound.
Based on Kim Ryeo Ryeong’s novel of the same name, the Trunk is one of Netflix’s most anticipated releases this fall. Directed by Kim Kyu Tae, the series stars Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin in the lead roles. Its impressive supporting cast includes Uhm Ji Won, Lee Jung Eun, Kim Dong Won, Lee Ki Woo, and Choi Young Jun. The series is set to premiere this Friday on Netflix.
