Japan’s Toyota Next-Gen Supra
Proceeding Independently Without BMW Collaboration
High Expectations for Original Technology
Toyota is gearing up for the next-generation Supra, and this time, it’s set to stand apart from its predecessor, which was developed in collaboration with BMW. While the current Supra was built using a joint platform and engine with the BMW Z4, the upcoming model will be a fully Toyota-designed vehicle, sparking high expectations among automotive enthusiasts.
Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda revived the original Supra in 2019, proudly declaring at the Detroit Motor Show, “Supra is back.” The fifth-generation model, introduced with significant input from BMW, returned after a 17-year hiatus. However, Toyota has signaled that the next iteration will have a more independent character as the automaker looks to showcase its own engineering expertise.
New Engine Lineup
Featuring a 2.0L Inline 4-cylinder Turbo Engine
The next-generation Supra is highly likely to be equipped with a 2L inline 4-cylinder turbo engine, which was newly developed by Toyota, instead of the inline 6-cylinder engine of the existing model. Toyota announced this engine in May 2024, boasting improved output and fuel efficiency compared to the 2.4L inline 4-cylinder engine. In addition, as an engine designed with motorsports in mind, great expectations are also garnered for its performance.
For the new engine, the base model with a maximum output of 300 horsepower and a maximum torque of 400 Nm will be prepared, and the high-performance model with a maximum torque of 400 horsepower and a maximum torque of 500 Nm will be prepared. The next-generation Supra is likely to be equipped with the latter high-performance engine. Since carbon-neutral fuel is also being considered, it is expected to make great progress regarding environmental friendliness.
Adoption of a Parallel Hybrid System
Enhanced Driving Performance
The next-generation Supra model is expected to adopt a parallel hybrid system. This system is designed to have a clutch between the engine and automatic transmission and drive with only the motor when necessary. This will allow for more efficient driving and enable drivers to choose various driving modes.
The hybrid system is also expected to improve performance significantly. Toyota’s body design and suspension will enhance the Supra’s dynamic driving performance. In addition, it is likely to be equipped with a 10-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission, and the exact specifications will be revealed later.
Expected Launch in 2027
A Promising New Chapter for the FR Sports Car
The next-generation Supra is scheduled to be released around 2027, and many car fans are looking forward to it. While the current model was somewhat disappointing in that it was not 100% manufactured by Toyota, the next-generation model will be a more complete model with Toyota’s technology. This will bring great joy to many car fans.
The new Supra is expected to boast more powerful performance and efficiency than its existing charm. As such, the birth of a new FR sports car will be an important milestone in automotive history.
