On the morning of November 27, a Tesla Cybertruck became stuck between a cement wall and a tree in Piedmont, California, and caught fire, killing three of the four occupants. They were all Piedmont High School Class of 2023 members and were visiting their hometown for Thanksgiving.

The vehicle was engulfed in flames at the time of the accident, and a witness rescued one survivor. However, the remaining occupants were not rescued until the fire department arrived. The cause of the vehicle fire has not yet been identified, but it is possible that it was related to the electric vehicle battery.

NHTSA Launches Accident Investigation

Speeding Identified as a Key Factor

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it was gathering initial information about the crash. It received information from Tesla, the manufacturer, and local law enforcement but has not yet started a formal investigation. Piedmont Police and the California Highway Patrol are also investigating the cause of the crash. Police said speed was likely a factor, and no defects in the vehicle have been found.

“It’s safe to say that speed was a factor,” Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said, adding that other factors could not be ruled out but that speed was a significant contributing factor. Police said there is no evidence that the mechanical failure of the Tesla Cybertruck played a role in the crash. The vehicle was engulfed in flames after the crash, and officers attempted to extinguish the blaze with their own fire extinguisher, but it was not enough to stop it. Firefighters later arrived and completely extinguished the blaze.

This Marks the Second Fatal Accident Involving the Tesla Cybertruck

This is the second fatal accident involving a Tesla Cybertruck. The first occurred in Texas in August of this year when a driver crashed into a concrete ditch, causing the vehicle to catch fire and killing the driver.

Tesla’s electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck, has been in the spotlight for its innovative design and performance. However, a series of accidents has raised safety concerns. The NHTSA and California police have said that they may reevaluate the Cybertruck’s safety based on the results of future investigations.
