The Nissan Leaf, a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) that has represented the brand’s commitment to sustainable mobility since its debut in 2010, is set to undergo a complete redesign. The third-generation model, which will transition into a crossover SUV, is expected to significantly shift design and performance. Following the release of the second-generation facelift in 2022, the redesigned Leaf is scheduled for launch in 2025, with a bold new look and improved capabilities.

A recent vehicle prototype has confirmed a dramatic departure from the previous hatchback design. The upcoming model will feature a sleek coupe-style roofline that enhances its sporty appeal.

Wing-shaped daytime running lights and linear front lamp design

The released rendering features the wing-shaped daytime running lights applied to the previously released Murano. The front has a panel grille, as befitting an electric vehicle. A unique feature is the center positioning lamp extending straight from the top of the panel grille. This is expected to create a more futuristic atmosphere than before. A horizontal air intake is placed on the bumper.

The lamp’s shape reflects the design elements of the Chill-Out concept car revealed by Nissan, and the front design, in particular, is mostly the same. However, the bumper design and details have been realistically modified to fit the mass-produced model. Since a similar design has already been applied to the concept car and Murano, the same design will likely be applied to the new Leaf.

Door handles integrated behind the C-pillar and cyberpunk-inspired rear taillights

From the side, the Leaf continues to evolve. A sharply sloped roofline emphasizes its short, curved bonnet and compact proportions, which offers a dynamic and sporty appearance. As seen in the prototype, the second-row door handles are integrated behind the C-pillar, contributing to a cleaner, more aerodynamic profile. The car will also feature auto-flush door handles for improved aerodynamics, a nod to its futuristic appeal.

At the rear, the tail lamps feature a pixelated pattern, further enhancing the car’s cyberpunk-inspired design. The lights incorporate vertical and horizontal graphics, with the center of the rear design highlighting the Nissan logo in illuminated text. A generous application of black high-gloss trim wraps the tail lamps, creating a unique and striking rear end.

Potential for High-Performance Variant

The redesigned Leaf will be built on the CMF-EV platform, already used for the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric and Nissan Ariya. This platform allows for flexibility, accommodating both single-motor and dual-motor configurations. Expect various powertrain options, including the potential for a high-performance variant.

The new Leaf is also expected to feature a high-efficiency battery that will increase the car’s range by 25% over the current model. This improvement means the Leaf could achieve a driving range of over 425 km (264 miles) on a single charge, addressing one of the most significant concerns for EV buyers.
