Rescue teams dispatched to the earthquake site in Jishishan, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, China. The damage appears to be more significant than initially confirmed on the 19th morning./Xinhua News Agency.

On the evening of the 18th at 11:59 PM (local time), a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Jishishan County, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, China. The current tally indicates that at least 110 people have lost their lives, with over 100 more injured, including many in critical condition. Given the significant number of severe injuries, there is a high likelihood that the death toll will continue to rise.

According to a report from Xinhua News Agency on the 19th, the epicenter of the recent earthquake is reported to be at a latitude of approximately 35.70 degrees north and a longitude of 102.79 degrees east, with a depth of around 10 km. Following the initial earthquake, aftershocks ranging from magnitude 3.1 to 4.1 have been continuously recorded.

The damage from this earthquake is likely to be greater than what has been officially announced so far. The fact that Xinhua News Agency reported that “houses and basic infrastructure such as water, electricity, and roads around the epicenter were damaged to various degrees” suggests that this is quite plausible.

Following the earthquake, local disaster management officials and firefighters immediately rushed to the scene. The local government is also reportedly preparing emergency response measures for the future. Furthermore, the central government’s emergency management department and the National Food and Strategic Supplies Administration have activated their cooperative framework, starting to urgently transport disaster relief food and supplies to the earthquake-stricken areas.
