Chinese astronauts are actively growing various plants in space, including cherry tomatoes and lettuce.
According to China Central TV (CCTV), on the 4th, the Shenzhou 17 astronauts living in China’s Tiangong space station recently transmitted a vlog video of their daily life.
In the 7-minute and 26-second video, astronaut Tang Hongbo tended to various plants planted in pots in one part of the space station.
When asked by a colleague what he was doing, he said, “I’m working on our cherry tomato hydration. Because there are no bees in space, I am the bee.”
In Tang Hongbo’s hand was a small brush for artificial hydration, and green and red cherry tomatoes were growing in the pot.
He then casually demonstrated the lack of gravity in space by lifting and releasing a pot, which floated in mid-air.
He also pointed to several pots with vegetables that appeared to be lettuce and green onions, saying, “If we add fresh vegetables to lunch today, lunch will be more abundant.”
In addition, the astronauts also revealed their bedrooms with family photos and their meals consisting of pork ribs, fried rice, and dumplings.
Chinese astronauts Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie, and Jiang Xinlin went to space aboard the Shenzhou 17 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province on October 26 last year.
The Shenzhou 17 docked with the space station Tiangong about six and a half hours later, and the astronauts have been living in space for three months.
