China has strongly urged the Philippines, with which China often has conflicts, to cease inappropriate remarks concerning the Taiwan issue.

On the 18th, Mao Ning, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, stated in a regular briefing, “The Taiwan issue is the core of China’s interests, and it is stimulating the emotions of 1.4 billion Chinese people.”

According to reports from media outlets, including Global Times, China recently recommended reading more books to Philippine President Marcos, who mentioned “increasing mutual benefits and promoting peace” about the results of Taiwan’s 16th presidential election. The Secretary of Defense of the Philippines retaliated by stating that this insulted the Philippine President, escalating the conflict between the two countries.

Spokesperson Mao Ning also pointed out, “The remarks from the Philippines seriously violate the One China policy and the declaration of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines. The Philippines gravely flouted its political promise to China and violently interfered in domestic affairs.” She further added, “The One China policy is China’s red line, and we cannot accept any provocation over the Taiwan issue. We will definitely and firmly retaliate.”

In addition, Spokesperson Mao Ning also mentioned issues related to Iran and Pakistan, saying, “Iran and Pakistan are neighbors. Both are friendly nations of China and have significant influence.” She expressed China’s hope that “both countries will maintain calm and restraint to prevent escalation of tension.” She also revealed that “if necessary, we are willing to play a constructive role in calming the situation.”

Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs briefly commented on the recent visit of North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui to Russia and her meeting with President Putin, saying, “This is an exchange between Russia and North Korea.” Responding to a question about plans for high-level meetings between North Korea and China, they added, “We have no information to provide at this time.”
