China Highlights Mutual Benefits of Trade Relations with Latin America

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asserted that the essence of China-US economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and coexistence.

Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that “I will not comment on unconfirmed information.” in a regular briefing on the 29th, in response to a question about China’s stance on foreign reports that Donald Trump, the former U.S. president, is considering imposing a 60% tariff on all Chinese imports if he is re-elected.

Wang continued, “The essence of China-US economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and coexistence.” He added that “maintaining a healthy and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations is in the basic interests of both countries and their people, and also contributes to the growth of the world economy.”

Wang also revealed that China takes seriously the issue of promoting visits to China by foreigners, including Japanese. He stated, “We will seriously study the demands of various sectors in Japan to restore the visa exemption policy,” and emphasized that China will seriously consider visa exemptions for Japan. He added, “We expect Japan to face China and jointly enhance the level of human exchanges,” and revealed that “China will seriously consider the demands of various sectors in Japan to resume visa exemptions.”

Before COVID-19, China had implemented a short-term visa exemption policy for countries such as Singapore, Brunei, and Japan. It has since resumed the visa exemption policy for some countries.

In response to a question about the timing of a call between the Chinese and Korean foreign ministers, Wang said, “Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, sent a congratulatory message after the inauguration of Minister Cho Tae-yul,” and added, “We hope to maintain communication with the Korean side regarding future (exchange) plans.” Concerning a question about high-level talks between North Korea and China after the visit of Sun Weidong, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, to North Korea, Wang stated, “There is no information available to provide.”

In response to a question about the Chinese stance on reports that a destroyer of the Russian Pacific Fleet conducted anti-submarine training in the South China Sea, Wang replied, “I am not well aware of the related situation.”
