A man in his 20s, known as a “perfect score medical student” and currently under investigation for the murder of his girlfriend, has become a hot topic online after committing the crime on the rooftop of a building near Gangnam Station in Seoul.
According to the police on May 8th, the 25-year-old suspect is under investigation for murdering his girlfriend on the rooftop of a building near Gangnam Station in Seocho District, Seoul, around 5 p.m. on May 6th. The suspect, who is currently a medical student, is said to have known where the carotid artery is located and used this knowledge to commit the crime.
Following the incident, netizens were shocked to learn that the suspect was a top-scoring student on the college entrance exam and a medical student at Yonsei University, one of the most prestigious universities in Seoul. This has led to the exposure of his personal information online.
The suspect, who graduated from a regular high school in Gyeonggi Province, had interacted with several media outlets after his college entrance exam, sharing tips on achieving a perfect score. His interviews led to his identification by netizens.
Although there were many top-scoring students in the year, the suspect took the college entrance exam, it was his interviews that led to his identification by netizens.
The suspect, who dreamed of becoming an excellent surgeon, initially aimed for Seoul National University, but due to the choice of subjects on the college entrance exam, he chose Yonsei University, a top-tier medical school. To apply to Seoul National University’s medical school, you need to take a combination of Science Exploration I + II or II + II. Typically, only students aiming for a specific major apply for Section II as it is very challenging.
The cut-off score for Yonsei University’s medical school, where the suspect applied, is 431 standard points and 299 percentile points. This is the same score as Seoul National University’s medical school, but many students seize the opportunity to apply to Yonsei’s medical school as it does not require Section II.
After the suspect, who was studying at a prestigious university, committed murder, a photo that the victim posted on social media with her parents spread across online communities, drawing more attention to the case.
Netizens expressed their condolences and outrage, with comments like, “How tragic to happen the day before Parents’ Day,” and “He must face justice.”
This incident has heightened sensitivity around reports of dating violence and murder, reflecting a broader national concern.
According to recent court rulings, another man in his 20s was sentenced to 30 years in prison in February for brutally killing his ex-girlfriend. The prosecution appealed for a heavier punishment, including life imprisonment.
Previously, the Ansan branch of the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office sought life imprisonment for the latter suspect in the first trial, arguing that the nature of his crimes, including murder and violations of the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence, was very bad.
Concerns have also been raised about the indiscriminate doxxing of individuals related to the case, highlighting the inappropriate behavior of revealing personal information due to anger over the incident.
Furthermore, even the victim’s personal information and photos have been exposed, and her family has appealed, “Please stop speculating.”
Someone who claimed to be the victim’s sister, posted on an internet community, “My sister told me she wanted to break up, and her boyfriend threatened to jump off the rooftop saying he wanted to die.” She argued, “My sister got involved in his premeditated crime while trying to stop him from killing himself out of her kind heart.”
The alleged sister added, “Our family is currently living in agony,” and “We tried to make her social media accounts private or delete them to help her rest in peace, but even that has been fraught with errors”
Meanwhile, the police have issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest and are proceeding with the investigation.
According to the police investigation, the suspect purchased a weapon at a large market in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, two hours before the crime, indicating that it was a premeditated crime.
During the police investigation, the suspect reportedly admitted to his crime, stating that he committed the crime out of resentment towards the victim who wanted to break up.
Police emphasized that they could not disclose detailed motives or investigation processes to prevent further harm to the family and others involved.
