A popular Chinese tourist spot is gaining attention for its unique approach to tackling obesity.
On Sunday, according to Guangming Daily, Wunü Mountain in Benxi City, Liaoning Province, launched an event offering discounts or exemptions on entrance fees based on body mass index (BMI).
The event’s slogan is “Trade Your Weight for a Ticket! We’ll Foot the Bill While You Shed the Pounds!”
BMI is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by height (m) squared. A BMI of 18.5-23.9 is normal, 24+ is overweight, and 28+ is obese.
Tourists with a BMI of 24-27.9 get a 50% discount, and those with a BMI of 28+ enter for free.
A ticket to Wunü Mountain typically costs 70 CNY (about 10 USD). Visitors can have their weight and height measured at the entrance, eliminating the need to bring a scale.
The tourist site lacks a cable car to the summit, so visitors must use a shuttle bus or walk. The distance from the visitor center at the mountain’s base to the entrance is 7.8 km, and it takes about 3 hours round trip on foot.
The event, launched in conjunction with the National Health Commission’s Year of Weight Management, will be held from April 7 to 27 for tourists nationwide.
An official from Wunü Mountain reported that from the 7th to the 15th, 3,480 visitors came, with 1,320 receiving discounts. The official also noted that most of the discount recipients were men.
