North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sparked controversy after allegations surfaced that he inappropriately touched his daughter, Ju-ae.

On Sunday, various online communities in the United States began circulating claims that Kim touched his daughter’s bottom.

The posts included footage from Channel A, which was reported on a North Korean Central Television broadcast on May 16. The video featured Kim attending the Completion Ceremony for 10,000 Housing Units in the Mars District, with his daughter, Ju-ae, drawing significant attention. In the footage, Ju-ae, dressed like her mother, Ri Sol Ju, joined her father on stage, applauding and watching the performance.

A subsequent scene caused controversy among netizens. As they got into a car, Kim was seen assisting Ju-ae by placing his hand on her waist and quickly grabbing the hem of her jacket, a gesture that caught viewers’ attention.

Netizens had mixed reactions to the footage. Some viewers who believed Kim touched his daughter inappropriately commented that the habit was alarming, questioned why he would grab his daughter’s clothing like that, and wondered who grabs clothing in such a manner. Others speculated that it looked like he instinctively reached down, then caught himself and grabbed her clothing, suggesting it could be an unconscious habit.

On the other hand, some viewers offered alternative interpretations, stating that he was grabbing her clothing, that it looked like he grabbed her jacket, not her bottom, and that he probably meant to grab her jacket but missed. Others suggested he was gripping her leather jacket.

During the event, Ju-ae was seen actively engaging with North Korean residents. Korean Central Television edited the footage into a 40-minute segment and broadcast it ten times over three days.

Some analysts suggest that this incident indicates North Korea’s intention to highlight Ju-ae in Pyongyang, reinforcing the legitimacy of the succession of hereditary power within the Kim dynasty.
