The release of Stelato S9, co-developed with Huawei, is imminent
Controversy over design plagiarism persists

Have you ever heard of the Chinese car brand Stelato? With China’s aggressive push into the automotive market, keeping track of all the new models can be overwhelming. The latest to join this burgeoning lineup is Stelato, a collaboration between Chinese tech giant Huawei and automotive manufacturer BAIC. Their first vehicle, the Stelato S9, is on the cusp of release.

This large electric sedan, available as a pure battery electric model and a range-extended EV, was prematurely revealed to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, making its appearance and specifications open to the public.

Developed by the same design team

As part of the ambitious HIMA project, Huawei has forged collaborative partnerships with various Chinese automotive manufacturers, including AITO from Seres, Luxeed from Chery Automobiles, Stelato from BAIC, and the upcoming Aojie from JAC. Notably, the Luxeed S7 resembles the Stelato S9 despite being produced by different manufacturers, owing to the involvement of the same design team.

The similarities between these two sedans are evident because they were developed by the same design team with shared styles and design approaches. Consequently, it’s common for people to mistake them for vehicles from the same manufacturer.

The Stelato S9 sets itself apart in size, lighting, and emblem design. Yet, it can’t seem to escape controversy over its similarities to other luxury sedans, like the Lincoln Continental, particularly in the rear lamps and trunk design. This has reignited debates over design originality.

Measuring over 16 feet long (5,160mm), 6.5 feet wide (1,987mm), and 4.8 feet tall (1,486mm), with a wheelbase of 10 feet (3,050mm), the S9 is notably larger than its sibling, the Luxeed S7, by 7.4 inches (189mm) in length and 3.9 inches (100mm) in wheelbase. When compared to other electric sedans, the Stelato S9 is longer than the Tesla Model S by 7 inches (180mm) but falls short of the Mercedes EQS by 2.5 inches (63mm) and the BMW i7 by 9 inches (231mm).

Will Huawei’s Technology Prove Its Worth?
Stelato S9 Set for International Markets

The Stelato S9 is poised to showcase Huawei’s prowess in electric vehicle technology. Its powertrain utilizes Huawei’s electric motors and batteries supplied by CATL. The flagship model comes equipped with Huawei electric motors, delivering 304hp (227kW/309PS) and 212hp (158kW/215PS). It’s also expected to be fully loaded with Huawei’s latest infotainment, compatibility, and safety features.

Scheduled to debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, the Stelato S9’s market launch is eagerly anticipated for June. According to reports from local Chinese media, prices will start from 300,000 to 500,000 yuan, approximately $41,670 to $69,450, signaling an ambitious entry point for this new model. BAIC, the manufacturer behind the S9, aims to initially launch in China before expanding to other markets across Asia and Europe, marking a significant step in the brand’s global strategy.
