ABC News

A man who achieved his dream of winning the lottery did so in a distinctive manner. A Canadian resident, Bon Truong, used a manual selection method to play the same number combination for 30 years.

He chose the numbers 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 20, and 30 based on anniversaries and family birthdays. His dedication to this personal number combination, rooted in his love for his family, eventually paid off when he won the lottery’s top prize after three decades of persistence.

It’s remarkable that Bon Truong used the same number combination for 30 years and ultimately won a significant prize. Truong secured the top spot in the Lotto Max, a Canadian lottery, and earned 60 million Canadian dollars.

In an interview, Truong recounted that he realized he had won first place the day after the lottery drawing on October 26, 2018, upon checking the numbers. He shared a light moment, noting that when he told his wife about the win, she didn’t believe him.

Moreover, this massive prize was the largest lottery win in the history of Alberta, Canada, where Bon Truong was residing. It was indeed a historic windfall.

However, he was so shocked by the enormous prize that he did not claim it for ten months and kept the news from those around him. He even admitted that his three children were unaware of the win.

Originally from Vietnam, Bon Truong moved to Canada to start a new life after the Vietnam War. At 22, he worked as a gardener, traveling between Vancouver and other locations.

Often, stories circulate about lottery winners who squander their fortunes without a care for the future. Yet, despite winning 60 million Canadian dollars, Bon Truong has revealed a wise and humble plan.

He stated, “After paying off my debts, I plan to take my family on vacation.” He added, “I don’t want my kids to grow up spoiled. I want them to learn the value of working to support themselves.” Even after acquiring immense wealth through the lottery, Bon Truong remains grounded and is determined to return to his job as a gardener.

Many people around the world dream of a life-changing moment through the lottery. However, there was an incident where such fortune befell a criminal.

In the UK, a man serving a life sentence for multiple counts of rape won the lottery and claimed a prize of 7.2 million pounds ($8.9 million). The man, Iorworth Hoare, was sentenced to life in prison but was held in an open prison where he was allowed weekend leaves, during which he could purchase lottery tickets.

After winning the jackpot, he hired a team of lawyers and was released on parole about seven months later. His whereabouts remained unknown for a long time after his release, but a media outlet eventually revealed that he had changed his name to Edward Thomas and had been moving between Sutherland and Newcastle.
