K-dramas that successfully portray the superhero genre
There is a Korean drama that has received a great response overseas.
The identity of this drama is the currently airing Disney Plus original series Moving.
The American media outlet IGN recently reported with the headline, “‘Moving’ is this year’s ‘Squid Game’.” IGN praised the artistic value and completeness of Moving.
IGN stated, “If we summarize the unique characteristic of Korean media, it is that the creators frequently discover an alchemical method of smoothly blending multiple genres.”
They also evaluated, “The Netflix hit ‘Squid Game’ captivated the world by combining the subversive emotions of anti-capitalism and family drama in the high-concept horror genre, and this year’s Korean drama ‘Moving,’ which features many stars, applied the same approach in the superhero genre.”
They further expressed their regret that more people would have been talking about this drama if Moving had not been trapped on Hulu without any promotion.
IGN highlighted that the biggest charm of Moving is combining two different superhero dramas into one.
IGN explained, “While the growth story of Bong Seok and the romance with supernatural powers unfold, a second story focuses on an enigmatic assassin hunting retired superheroes all over Seoul. ‘Moving’ also showcases a natural blend of genres that can be seen in the best Korean movies and dramas. The sweet and humorous romance between Bong Seok (played by Lee Jeong Ha) and Hee Soo (Played by Go Yoon Jung) is captivating. However, viewers are fully immersed in their couple because they know that a violent fate awaits them, just like their parents.”
While Netflix started a massive promotion as soon as Squid Game showed signs of becoming a hit, IGN expressed disappointment that the quiet release of Moving is surprisingly minimal compared to the acclaim it is receiving.
Moving is a superhero action series that depicts children living in the present while hiding their supernatural abilities and parents who have lived with painful secrets as they face a huge danger that transcends time and generations. It is based on the popular webtoon of the same name by Kang Full. The cast includes Ryu Seung Ryong, Han Hyo Joo, Jo In Sung, Cha Tae Hyun, Ryu Seung Beom, Kim Sung Kyun, Kim Hee Won, Moon Sung Geun, Lee Jeong Ha, Go Yoon Jung, Kim Do Hoon, and more.
Moving achieved the highest viewing time in the first week of any Korean Disney Plus production. It also ranked as the most-watched series in the Disney Plus Asia region, including Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, based on the viewing time in the first week.
