Amidst the growing interest and attention from users of the Netflix original series Mask Girl, it is also gaining significant attention in Europe.
Recently, French and other European media have been introducing Mask Girl one after another, attracting attention. Additionally, each media outlet has reported in detail on the background of the recent global popularity of Korean movies and dramas.
According to the latest issue of Weekly Global released by the Korea Creative Content Agency on the 3rd, the French media is paying consecutive attention to Mask Girl.
The French game specialized media Jeux vidéo introduced the outline of the drama, describing Mask Girl as a story of a protagonist named Kim Momi, who has appearance complexes and works as a regular employee during the day but transforms her life by becoming an internet star who hides her face with a mask at night.
Furthermore, quoting an article from the American film magazine Variety, they reported on the power of Korean content, which recorded “the highest viewership of English-language works in the Netflix Asian market.”
Mask Girl is maintaining its top position for the second week in the TV non-English category of Netflix’s ranking site Netflix Top 10. It has recorded a figure that is twice as high as the viewing time of the Norwegian drama Ragnarok Season 3, which ranked second with a total of 50.8 million viewing hours, with 28.8 million viewing hours.
The French daily newspaper Ouest France stated that Mask Girl is an adaptation of a webtoon of the same name serialized on Naver in 2015, and it was directed by Kim Yong Hoon, who won the Rotterdam International Film Festival Jury Award for the movie Beasts Clawing at Straws.
They also revealed that well-known Korean drama actors such as Go Hyun Jung, Ahn Jae Hong, Yeom Hye Ran, and Choi Daniel appear in the drama, even overseas.
The local women’s magazine Grazia also praised Mask Girl as a drama that embodies all the elements of a well-made K-drama and deals with universal and social themes. They added, “It focuses on the harm that beauty demands and the social pressure that pushes individuals to the edge of a cliff.”
