‘The Marvels’ Opening Weekend Predicted to Be Lowest in Marvel Cinematic Universe History

TV Report Views

Marvel Studios

The Marvels is expected to record the lowest opening score in Marvel history.

On the morning of the 8th (local time), the American film specialty media, The Hollywood Reporter, revealed that Marvel Studios is predicting the opening score of The Marvels to be between $60 million and $65 million. This is close to the lowest opening score in Marvel Studios’ history when considering inflation.

Just three weeks ago, Marvel had set the opening score target for The Marvels at $75 million to $80 million. However, interest in The Marvels has steadily decreased, and the ticket pre-sale rate has surpassed that of the DC Comics film Flash, causing concern.

So far, The Incredible Hulk, released in 2008, holds the lowest opening score among MCU films with $55.4 million. Following this is Ant-Man, released in 2015, with $57.2 million.

Marvel Studios

In response, Marvel hastily revised The Marvel marketing campaign before its release today (8th). The day before the movie’s release, Marvel emphasized its connection with the Avengers franchise, announced a new trailer featuring the Thor character Valkyrie, and seemed to devise a promotional strategy belatedly.

Meanwhile, The Marvels is a sequel to Captain Marvel, which grossed $1.13 billion worldwide in 2019. It depicts a story where Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson), the hero of Captain Marvel who protects the universe, falls into a crisis where her location changes with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) every time she uses her powers.

Korean actor Park Seo-jun, although in a small role, delivered a passionate performance as Prince Yon, Captain Marvel’s husband.

It remains to be seen whether The Marvels, which will be unveiled today (8th), can defy everyone’s expectations and succeed at the box office.
