Popular Japanese actress Nagiko Tono recently confessed to being a victim of scams while using a dating app. This comes after a string of three public relationships and breakups in 2023, and have been known to be open sharing her loneliness and vulnerability.
Nagiko Tono revealed that she fell victim to a scam on a dating app on Fuji TV’s “Mezamashi8” on March 15.
The show explored the rise of “dine and dash” scams targeting dating app users. Several victims shared their experiences, including actress Nagiko Tono. The scam involves someone disappearing after a date, leaving their partner stuck with the bill. One tactic mentioned was vanishing after a supposed bathroom break.
In a phone interview, Nagiko Tono revealed she was the victim of a “dine and dash” scam by a perpetrator 20 years younger. When Nagiko went to pay the bill for the meal they shared in a basement bar, he had vanished. The interviewer inquired if she saw him leave. “It happened too quickly,” Nagiko replied, speculating, “This might not be his first time doing this.”
Nagiko continued, “While I’m grateful it wasn’t a huge amount, the situation left me uneasy. It’s simply wrong. I can’t fathom why someone would behave that way. It’s clearly a crime.”
Nagiko Tono revealed she had used dating apps to meet several boyfriends in the past. However, due to the continuous public scrutiny surrounding her dating life, she disclosed that she quit using dating apps in October 2023.
Online commenters expressed mixed reactions. Some questioned Nagiko Tono’s claims: “She said she deleted the app last year, but this suggests she reinstalled it.” Others sympathized with her experience, commenting, “It’s unfortunate a scammer targeted her.” There were also concerns about her well-being, with comments like, “I worry about this situation. Is she okay emotionally?”
