Actress Lee Young Ae’s Concerns: Is the Film Industry Losing Its Emotional Depth?

Veteran Actress Lee Young Ae voiced her concerns about a trend in the film industry that prioritizes shock value over substance.

On March 19, a new interview and photoshoot featuring Lee was unveiled for Arena Homme Plus.

Fresh off her roles in “Maestra” and the film “A Wonderful Sight,” Lee reflected on her recent projects. She mentioned being particularly touched by the positive reception of “A Wonderful Sight” among younger viewers, saying, “It was wonderful to connect with so many young fans.” Lee also expressed her enjoyment of “Maestra,” stating, “As a music lover myself, I felt immense joy working on that project.”

Lee delved deeper into her concerns, discussing the importance of nuanced emotional portrayals in acting. “An actor thrives on conveying rich emotions,” she explained, “but overly dramatic performances can steal the audience’s moment. They have no tears left to shed if we cry for them.” She continued, expressing her observations about the current film landscape. “There’s a surge of stimulating content, especially on streaming platforms. When I did ‘One Fine Spring Day,’ there was a wave of heartwarming movies. Today, things seem heavily tilted towards a specific style, limiting the choices available to audiences.”

She revealed, “Even younger actors confide in me, saying, ‘There aren’t any good melodramas these days!’ I understand their frustration.” Lee clarified her position, stating, “I’m not advocating for a return to overly didactic dramas, but I do believe there’s a need for content that’s more accessible to younger viewers, something that doesn’t rely solely on intense stimulation.”

Reflecting on the enduring popularity of the iconic “Do you want to come over for ramen?” line from “One Fine Spring Day,” Lee admitted surprise at its lasting impact. “Honestly, I never expected that line to resonate for so long,” she confessed. Lee went on to express her belief in the universality of human emotions. “Love, heartbreak, breakups – these experiences transcend time,” she explained. “That’s why I don’t think there’s a need to differentiate between old and new movies. Great stories connect with us regardless of when they were made.”

Lee has been married to Jung Ho-young, who is known to be 20 years older, has a fortune of 2 trillion since 2009, and has a pair of twins. Lee Young-ae said, “My schedule is mostly for the kids. My daughter likes K-pop, so we go to concerts together,” and introduced her motherly side, saying, “I also get angry and yell when I’m upset, so my daughter tells me, ‘Mom, you have a dual personality.'”

Lee has been married to businessman Jung Ho Young since 2009 and balances her career with raising their twins. Their marriage shocked the public when it was revealed he was 20 years older and possessed a $150 million fortune. She shared a glimpse into her life as a mom, revealing, “My schedule revolves largely around the kids these days. My daughter’s a big K-pop fan, so we enjoy concerts together.” Lee acknowledged parental challenges, saying, “Sometimes I get frustrated and raise my voice. My daughter even teases me about having a ‘dual personality.'”
